bruno tommaso - dodici variazioni su un tema di jerome kern

as the title implies, this record features bruno tommaso and his band delivering a variety of styles, following up on jerome kern's original "yesterday". there's really something for everyone here: slow and sentimental; grooving, slightly fusiony, mediterranean; faster, freer, bebop; sparse, elliptical, avant garde (especially on the b-side). for my taste, the vibraphone-led "per moto contrario" is exceptional, but the playing throughout is rock solid and these disparate styles actually flow together really nicely, in kind of a history-of-jazz way.
