virgule iv - des accords d'accord

all-female french quartet, an "experimental jazz meets avant-rock type band"; this is their only album (though the members would also populate the equally cool group l'empire des sons) and it is really something, ticking many boxes and more. check out the jagged synth bass and splashy drumming on "hommage à la brebis expiatoire" and follow that somewhat noirish introduction into slanted and playful arrangments of "drum and bass", peppered with marimba, cello and vocals. these songs are casual, loose, and jammy, but the band has a keen sense of restraint, so we get a lot of duets and trios, rather than everyone clattering at once - this contributes a real sense of conversation, with members seemingly contributing when they come up with a part. uncommon.
